The Journey Begins
Leela looks up at the night sky and wonders — are all those lights stars?

Understand what the Solar System is and why it is worth exploring, one small story at a time.
The evening is quiet. Leela sits by the window, chin resting on her hands, watching the sky turn from deep blue to velvet black. One by one, tiny lights appear — some bright, some faint, some twinkling.
Tonight, one light seems special. It glows steadily, closer to the horizon than the others.
"What is that?" Leela wonders aloud.
Every light in the sky — is it a star?
A wonderful question! Let me ask you one back: what kind of things glow with their own light, and what kind of things shine because light bounces off them?
Hmm… a lamp glows by itself. But a mirror shines when light falls on it!
Exactly, Leela. Some of the lights in the night sky are stars — huge, distant suns that make their own light. But a few are planets. They shine only because sunlight reflects off them.
The planet you are looking at tonight belongs to our Solar System — the little family of worlds that travels with our own Sun.
What Is the Solar System?
The Solar System is everything that travels around our Sun because of its gravity:
- The Sun — a star at the center
- Eight planets — Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune
- Moons — natural companions that circle planets
- Dwarf planets, asteroids, and comets
- Vast, empty space in between
Think of the Sun as the quiet heart of the neighborhood. It holds every planet in its place, the way a gentle thread holds beads on a necklace.
The word "solar" comes from "Sol", the Latin name for the Sun — so "Solar System" simply means "the Sun's family".
What We'll Explore
This journey has twelve stops. You'll visit each planet, meet the Moon, and finally travel to the mysterious region beyond Neptune. Along the way, Leela will ask questions, Manjari will drop clues, and Astra will reveal the knowledge hidden in every answer.
Four rocky worlds and four giant worlds.
The Sun — our personal star.
Natural satellites orbiting planets.
Asteroids, comets, and dwarf planets.
Which part of the Solar System are you most curious to explore — and why?
Your First Quick Check
Why do planets appear as lights in the night sky?
The Solar System is the Sun's family — the star at its center and everything that orbits it, including our planet Earth.
